Albers Marine Fishing, Hunting, Indoor-Outdoor Show
Held in late January, the Albers Marine Fishing, Hunting, Indoor-Outdoor Show at Meadowbrook Mall features vendors displaying goods including new boats, fishing, hunting, archery, boating equipment, tackle, antique lures, taxidermy, truck accessories, ATV’s, guided hunting and fishing outfitters, recreational vehicles, golf carts and boat covers.
Four States Open and Four States Women’s
A bowling tournament so large, it starts the first weekend of March and continues each weekend through mid-May, the Four States Open and Four States Women’s Bowling Championships are held at Holiday Lanes in Pittsburg. The event brings in teams from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Nebraska.
Great Plains Regional Fox Hunt
Held annually in early March, the Great Plains Regional Fox Hunt is conducted by Coal Valley Hounds at the Wesbrook Bar-X Ranch, 5450 Northwest Coal Valley Road in McCune. Since 2002, Dr. Wes and Dr. Kathleen Sandness have conducted this event featuring 400 hunters, riders, their hounds and mounts.
Kansas Road Cycling Championships and Criterium Championships
Held annually in June, the Kansas Cycling Association conducts its Road and Criterium State Championships on the same weekend in Crawford County. The road race course is held on a 13-mile loop east of Arma and through rural Crawford County. The Criterium Championship is a short course sprint race held on the campus of Pittsburg State University.
Kansas Time Trial Championships
Held annually in June, the Kansas Cycling Association conducts its Time Trial State Championships near Walnut.
Jock’s Nitch Softball Classic
Held annually in June on Father’s Day weekend, the Jock’s Nitch Softball Classic is a large amateur softball tournament featuring 100 to 120 teams. The tournament is held at Pittsburg’s Lincoln Park, Don Gutteridge Sports Complex, but also spills over to the softball fields at Pittsburg State University and in nearby Frontenac. Tournament features division for Men’s B-C, D and E teams, women’s and coed.
Pittsburg State University Football Coaches Clinic
Held annually on the third full weekend in June, the Pittsburg State University Football Coaches Clinic is an exchange of ideas and philosophies with the coaching staff at Pittsburg State University. With more than 250 years of collegiate and varsity high school level coaching experience, the Gorillas football staff has cemented the Pitt State football program annually among the nation’s elite teams. The Pittsburg State University Football Coaching Clinic also features some of the most noted football coaches from around the country - from the high school, collegiate and professional ranks - sharing their knowledge on the game to help continue the tradition of outstanding football in the region.
Mid-America Youth Basketball Tournament
Held annually on the third full weekend in June, the Mid-America Youth Basketball Tournament features 65-plus teams, ages 4th grade through high school, competing for championship bragging rights. Tournament is played at St. Mary’s-Colgan Fieldhouse, Pittsburg High gymnasium, Pittsburg State University and Frontenac High School. MAYB is designed to allow young athletes in the Midwest the chance to play basketball during the summer months.
